Stereotypes of Healthy Living Bloggers

by forloveofcarrots on February 21, 2013

Hey there! Hope your day is off to a good start. I seriously considered skipping the gym this morning in favor or more sleep but new once I got moving I would feel better. So far so good!

Over the weekend Cait was busy obsessing over something with coconut and I stated I’m allergic (actually I said I hate coconut). She said “oh, I guess I just assumed every healthy living blogger liked coconut.” Which made me laugh because its so true, there are so many stereotypes of what HLB (healthy living blogger) like and do not like. So while plugging away on the elliptical this am I came up with a list!

Disclaimer: please read this post with an open mind and sense of humor. If you don’t find it satirical or humorous we probably don’t share the same sense of humor.

1.) Every HLB like coconut. Wrong or maybe I really am the only HLB who doesn’t like coconut and that would be perfectly fine.

2.) Every HLB likes some sort of Nut butters. While I am absolulety positively in love with peanut butter and other butters of the sort. I know a few HLB who do not, take for example my girl Alex, she is a hater and I respect her for that. (sorry for throwing you under the bus)

3.) Every HLB does crossfit. Um wrong! It may be on my fitness bucket list but I do not intend to become obsessed with it like other bloggers are. To each is own.

4.) Every HLB likes avocado pudding. Um I’m sorry I tried it, its gross, gimme the real stuff!

5.) You’re a HLB which probably means you don’t eat sugar. You’re right I don’t eat sugar I only just pretend to eat 16 Handles every other day.

6.) Every HLB likes frozen yogurt. Well I do adore frozen yogurt and I may as well take up stock in the 16 Handles franchise, not every HLB likes frozen yogurt. My girl Paige happily enjoys the real stuff.

7.) If your a HLB then you obviously like protein pancakes. I am indifferent about these.

8.) As a HLB you must like oatmeal and oats in a jar. Well yes I am a huge fan of both but again I know people who just don’t like oatmeal, and that is just fine.

9.) Every HLB likes Kombucha. Yeah not true, I would have to say Julie said it best when she said “it tastes like butt.”

10.) Every HLB loves Chobani and only Chobani. Well yes I do love some Chobani, I still enjoy Okios or Fage or the Trader Joe’s brand Greek yogurt because it is more wallet friendly.

What Stereotypes do you see as a HLB?

If your not a blogger do you see stereotypes through the blogs that you read?

Hahahaha, this is SO funny and true. I always say I’m the only one who doesn’t like eggs. For some reason, I just can’t bring myself to eat them! If I do, it’s once in a blue moon and they’re loaded with cheese and veggies. But I DO love me some froyo. ;)

Great (funny) list! There are so many things people assume about you when you mention you write a blog, let alone a healthy living blog! And unfortunately that’s true for a lot of things… I haven’t tried the avocado pudding, but can’t bring myself to do it – I love pudding and avocados (separately) too much, I don’t want to ruin either!

Don’t put them together, they are better left separated!

Haha I found myself nodding in agreement with almost everything on the list. I don’t like nut butter at all, give me skippy please!

this post is soooo great and i love the disclaimer about the senses of humor haha! we obviously have the same sense of humor but you already knew that. i think something that will go on my list is paleo – i have no desire to try it! yes i have no desire to try kombucha either. and oatmeal, go away, i hate you.

This post is too good; I may or may not have chuckled to myself for a good 10 mins!
so refreshingly honest and genuine too.

I will admit that I’m a HLB that has an unhealthy/also very cliche obsession with nut butters and oats, but I’ve also never tried cross fit in my entire life- I still don’t really get what it is!

I got my first chobani delivery 2 days ago, and I was so excited but felt like the biggest conformist!
typical HLB ;)

Great list and funny stuff. I’ll attempt to add to the list:
Every HLB thinks smoothies are one of the basic food groups.

Oh I love that!!! And so many things are just true. I must admit I don’t feel like a HLB when it comes to sugar as I eat so much of it, yeah. And FroYo and Kombucha we can’t even buy here so i don’t even know if I like it or not :-)

Too funny and so very true for a lot of them! The CrossFit thing cracks me up because when I started it a couple years ago no one knew what it was and I constantly had to try to explain to people. Now I feel like everyone is doing it!

Oh, except froyo. But I like the real stuff just as much if not more, so I count that as yet one more reason. Oh welllllll

Oh, and #8 and #10. I don’t get the OIAJ love – it’s like mediocre oatmeal 3/4 the way through and then BAM, flavor town. And for GY? Fage Total all the way home!

This is so true! Since I’m recovering from an ED, I always wonder if what I’m eating is what is good or something I saw around the blogging community. My mind is so screwed up to begin with I have no idea anymore. lol. I have never tried Kombucha, and honestly, I’m really afraid of it. It has a living thing in it?? Uhmmm, what?! I’m just confused. I always pick one up at the store and put it down… Maybe one day.

And although I LOVE frozen yogurt, too, there is nothing like real ice cream. The only thing making frozen yogurt better is the toppings bar, lets be honest.

Oh the comparison trap how I fell pray to that often when I first started blogging! Now I just don’t care but its hard to get to that point and I obviously still have moments! Um just take my word for it you dont need to try Kombucha.

You are so right about the frozen yogurt topping bar, I always say to Jeff that I just want to get a cup of clodhoppers and mochi and skip the fro yo!

Reply

Caitlin February 22, 2013 at 6:35 pm

I feel you on that too Lauren! Sometimes I feel guilty for not eating paleo or even trying it because so many other bloggers do it and like it and look great. But it’s good to recognize yourself making those comparison traps so you can remember what’s true to you! It sounds like Kombucha may not be!

Seriously, avocado pudding is nasty. I tried it once and couldn’t even force it down. I was so sad I wasted an avocado on it! Every HLB liking frozen yogurt…I feel like that’s a general girl thing. I don’t know any girls who dislike it anyway, but I have the good stuff too when I want to! I’ve never tried Kombucha and never really wanted to, although now I’m curious to see how bad it is! haha

I get my plain Greek yogurt at Costco–it’s delicious and much more cost effective than Chobani!

I so don’t get the “anything in a jar” thing. I use plates and bowls. :P

Seriously though, I sometimes think the HLB world is just highschool–extended into adulthood. Trends and cliques and the “popular girls”.
