A few weeks ago the general manager Micaela of Tautog Tavern reached out to me asking if I wanted to come into Tautog and try their menu.
Tautog Tavern is within walking distance from where Jeff and I live, and we love checking out the local spots.
I will be honest, from the outside I would never think Tautog has food worthy of stopping in for. Judging by the night life it brings, it seems like a great bar scene. But if there is one thing I have learned from Diner, Drive-ins and Dives it’s that you CANNOT judge a restaurant by its cover.
I was immediately sold on the place when I saw they had mason jars on the table.
For those of you that are pickle back fans, this is the place to go! They offer pickle backs in your choice of alcohol and your choice of pickle juice.
I had looked at the menu prior to going and was pretty sold on what I wanted to order. Before I ordered I made sure to ask Micaela what she suggested. I planned on getting the Pat LaFrieda hanger steak and when Micaela said she recommended that and said she wont order steak anywhere else because Tautog’s is so good, and a good price ($16.95) I was sold.
Jeff and I did the ultimate restaurant faux pas and ordered the same meal.
We started with the fried pickles; which is a collection of pickles vegetables deep fried. The green beans were my favorite and the garlic dipping sauce it came with was fantastic! I later kept dipping my steak into it.
The steak definitely lived up to it’s hype! The salad too was delicious! The dressing on top of the salad was a perfect amount and not drenched on like some restaurants do. I enjoyed my brussles sprouts but felt like they would have been better with the bacon (if I ate bacon). They needed that salt kick that mine were clearly missing. I tried a bite of Jeff’s mashed potatoes, while they were good I found them to be a tad too buttery for my liking.
Although, Jeff and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal I couldn’t help but think that vegetarian Kaitlin would not have cared for the restaurant. The menu left little to no options for a vegetarian. They had a make your own salad section which I thought was a nice touch but if I am going out to dinner, I don’t want to be getting a salad I could make at home for myself. The only other vegetarian option was fish n’ chips.
Micaela did mention that the menu will always be changing because she wants the menu to highlight what is in season.
I am certainly glad I got to try their food and will definitely be going back.
Have you ever been to a restaurant that from the outside you weren’t sure about but the food definitely delivered?
What’s your favorite thing to order when you go out to eat?
