Artificial Sweeteners

I am about to hopefully ruin you relationship with artificial sweeteners. Having said that you can read this post with a grain of salt, or with high interest. At the end of the day all I can do is share my knowledge with you and you can take it or leave it.

There are 5 artificial sweeteners approved by the FDA.
1.) Aspartame- aka NutraSweet and Equal
2.) Saccharin- aka Sweet N Low
3.) Sucralose- aka Splenda
4.) Acesulfame K- produced by a German company found in food, beverages and pharmaceutical products world wide.
5.) Neotame- produced by NutraSweet Company

There is no clear evidence stating that artificial sweeteners are linked to cancer. But, there have been several studies done that link the consumption of aspartame and saccharin to cancer.

Aspartame should be avoided by everyone because it contains 3 very well known neurotoxins (phenylalnine, aspartic, methanol).

General rule of thumb, if I can’t pronounce an ingredient I probably shouldn’t be eating it.

The following symptoms are associated with the consumption of aspartame.
headaches, hearing loss, blurred vision, memory loss, personality changes, anxiety attacks, skin lesions, fatigue, chest pains, nausea, eye problems, slurred speech, violent episodes, hyperactivity, muscle cramps, PMS, increased appetite, dizziness, insomnia, hallucinations, mild to suicidal depression, mood changes, joint pain, menstrual irregularities.

Just to name a few.

Quick Story:
I gave a presentation at my office on sugar and told them all about artificial sweeteners. After the presentation a co-worker came up to me and said I am so happy you did this. She explained that a little over a year ago she had wanted to lose weight so she replaced all sugar with the above artificial sweeteners. She said over the year she started to lose her memory, she was getting horrible headaches and she had no idea why. Her doctor didn’t even know why. She would go see her doctor and at the beginning he would say I want you to remember “red door.” Thirty minutes later he would ask her what it was she was supposed to remember and she couldn’t tell him!

She said she eventually stopped the artificial stuff but never realized the correlation until my presentation.

To make a long story short, be mindful of what you are putting into your body. If you notice a change in how you act or feel after adding something foreign into your diet take it out and see if you feel better.

Stick to the natural sweeteners!

Do you use artificial sweeteners? Will you continue to after reading this?

Have you had any of the above symptoms from artificial sweeteners?
I definitely have. In college all I would use was artificial sweeteners and I would always have vodka with crystal light at my drink of choice when going out. Not a good combination in the least!
