Greater Hartford 1/4 Marathon

I was all excited to tell you about my race and then something a little more exciting happened later in the day!

Thank you again for all of your kind words. We are over the moon and appreciate all the love and support!

On to the race shall we!?

My dad and I arrived at the race right around 8:30. We had about an hour and a half to kill before the race began. We scoped out the course. The race took place in the MDC Reservoir. It was beautiful and it was nice to have a change of scenery and run in the woods/along a lake rather then the street.

The Greater Hartford 1/4 Marathon benefits the Blazeman Foundation in its War on ALS. Over the past six years they have raised over $25,000 for the Blazeman Foundation. More information can be found at

I actually didn’t know that this race benefits ALS until the race start.

At the start of the race I found a friend that I used to swim with in High School. She is a killer runner and said run with me. I told her I would try but she was a speed demon.

I lost her shortly after the beginning. I knew if I took it out as fast as her I would have been dying by the end.

It took me a while to get into a good rhythm. The course was a slow incline and some of the hills were killer. I haven’t been doing much hill running so the hills got the best of me. Luckily the race was a double loop so the second time around I knew what to expect.

Miles 1 and 2 were rough for me and I didn’t really find that rhythm until mile 3. Once I found it I settled into a steady pace until the last 1/4 mile when I took off to the finish. I love passing someone who has been in front of me the entire time at that final stretch. I am sure they are giving me death stares.

I finished with the time of 50:40 an average mile time of 7:44. I came in 55th overall (out of 490) and I came in 2nd (out of 53) in my age group which is 25-29. I didn’t stay long enough after for awards but my friend who I saw at the beginning came in first in our age group and texted me to tell me she had grabbed my 2nd place prize!

My dad finished with a time of 54:56 and came in 110th overall (out of 490) and came in 5th out of 12 in his age group!

1/4 marathon

Although I had really wanted to come in under 50 minutes, I would have to say it was a pretty good race. I am looking forward to doing that race next year. And next year I will be prepared for the hills.

Did you run this weekend?

Have you ever ran a 1/4 marathon or 10k?

Do you like running hills? Do you train for them?
