This time last year I was getting ready to go on the trip of a lifetime. I was packing up to go to South Africa for 3 months!
I was going to South Africa to volunteer. This was a post grad adventure and it was pretty spur of the moment. While in college I always wanted to travel but I knew I wanted to do it post grad rather then a study abroad experience. Since I was swimming in school I knew it wasn’t really something I could swing and I also didn’t want to do the whole school thing while abroad anywhere.
Well anyways shortly before I left I learned that I was going to be the only American on my program everyone was going to be from Germany, one from Canada and one from Spain! (fun fact I was a minority there and I loved it, it wasn’t until the last 2 weeks of my trip that I met people from America. Before that everyone I met while traveling and at hostiles were from other foreign companies, it was awesome!)
Needless to say I was really really nervous going in! I was afraid that no one was going to talk to me, I am glad I realized that everyone needed to know English if they were going to be volunteering but I still worries no one would want to hang out with me. The first night we arrived we were all nervous and all excited! We went out to dinner as a group and that is when I started to get to know Teresa my friend soulmate!
I realize this is a weird thing to say but have you ever met someone for the first time and felt like you knew them your whole entire life and that they just understand you? You aren’t afraid to tell them things about yourself and your life because you know they wont judge you!
Within the first few days we had talked about things not many people in our lives knew about and we knew we would be friends for life! I can’t believe it has been a year since I have seen her!
Ok this is post is getting long and I am sure your wondering why I am telling you this, it is because Teresa will be coming for Thanksgiving and I am soo excited! I think it is probably the best holiday for a foreigner to come and attend! And I hope to go to Germany very soon!!
